How Do I Protect My PC?

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

Here’s a layman’s guide to PC security…

I am often asked which programs to use to protect a PC. I think is a legitimate question, a question with many answers.

You need to use different programs to protect against different threats. They break down in to 5 categories:
1. Anti-virus
2. Anti-Spyware
3. Browser Pop-up Blocker
4. Software Security Updates
5. Backup

I’ll spend a brief moment on each.

Anti-virus: You should have an anti-virus program that can catch any viruses that may attempt to reach you via the internet. It should also scan incoming Email if you are checking locally. It should have the ability to run a scan automatically. Be aware that the more features a program has the better protected you are, but the more system resources it may use. This could slow your machine down.

Anti-Spyware: You should have some kind of protecion against these threats. Most programs catch most problems, but some are better than others at some things. Often times, multiple anti-spyware programs running concurrently is not a bad idea. They should have some kind of real-time protection.

Browser Pop-up blocker: These are actually a very useful tool. First, they do just what they say, block pop-ups. Second, they often have useful features like related links, or search boxes, or they will fill in forms parts of forms on the internet for you.

Software Security Updates: If there is an update for your main programs, especially system files, then get it. Trust me, these companies are not in the habit of spending time and labor on a useless update. Update your PC system files. Update your Anti-virus manually, just to make sure. Update your Anti-spyware manually, just to make sure. Do all of these things once a week, and make it a habit to run a scan with them too.

Backup: Lastly, I must add the one thing that will save you headaches and anguish should something happen to your PC: Back up your data. Record your pictures, important documents, music, and whatever else you couldn’t get back if the PC was stolen, damaged, or it failed. I cannot stress enough how important it is to back it up. Oh, and back it up.

Did I mention to back up your system? Good. PC4PEOPLE.com makes some recommendations as to what to use here.

Wine racks and accessories

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Sponsored review:

As most of you know, I worked as a bartender and bar manager to pay my way through college, and stayed in the business for several years after. I became very interested in wines during this time, and still love to pull out the bottle for a special evening. With my love of wine, the gadgets, and the tools that go along with wine, I was pleased to review the site: http://www.thevinestore.com/ available here: Wine Rack. Below is a review of the site.

Wine drinkers often like to show of their knowledge, taste, and skill; that’s why this site is perfect. They have many different wine racks and wine accessories to help you be the envy of any amateur sommelier. They stock and ship a wide variety of racks to the entire United States. I especially liked several of the hanging wrought-iron wine racks as it would surely help keep the corks from drying out.

TheVineStore.com also carries a variety of wine tasting tables/ I have a small buddy-bar type table similar to several they have, and it is nice to have an area dedicated to your wine. They also carry what I believe to be a very diverse selection of wine glasses, port glasses, and decanters for your every need.

The site uses yahoo as their ecommerce cart so you know it is safe and secure. Check them out if you need the tools to impress, or if you are shopping for my birthday. (Hint, hint)

How to grieve for a pet

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Everyone deals with the loss of a pet in their own way. For many of us, pets are more important to us than our own family.

I have recently run in to a unique way to grieve for your pet, it is called http://www.immortalpets.com/. They allow you to create a webpage of tribute to your pet. You can add your pets pictures, music, quotes, and even candles to the page.

You can have the page for 2 weeks free, and if your grieving isn’t done by then, you can make your pet truly immortal by purchasing the page and keeping it available for a lifetime.

Online Dating

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Sponsored Review:

I have been asked to take a look at Be2.net - Free Online Dating: A Place For Friends and tell you about it. I don’t usually feel comfortable meeting people online, but this site offers a very relaxed atmosphere. This atmosphere allows you to move at your own pace and meet only the people that interest you.

Be2.net is a Free Online Dating Community Site, that offers the ability to make a video profile so others can see it instantly.

They also have coded an instant messaging system that they say is similar to ICQ which members can use for free.

You can see who’s online in real-time so you can make a love connection right there.

You have to be a registered member to gain access to the areas needed to send emails, instant message, and chat with other registered members.

They have a rating system so you can post thoughts about other users.

They have a thing called Friendship Circles where you can create a group and then introduce the individuals in your group to each other in a no-pressure and polite way.

With your registered membership, you can review the things people have posted about you.

Try it out! To find them go here:

Employment Websites

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Sponsored Review:

I recently took a look at an employment website with some unique ideas on how to generate more buzz for both themselves and there employers listings. This site is http://www.now-hiring.ca and can be found at: Now Hiring Canada

For Employers, they offer 24 hour support, complete access to their websites, privacy controls to choose to show or hide your contact info, opportunity to add your full color logo, receive and send private messages to prospective clients, analyze online statistics that are included, and save your favorite resumes to a folder. All of these features are available with any size package. A one job posting starts at about $249 CD and there are volume discounts available.

The best part of now-hiring.ca, is they will help create custom signs for your car or business window to advertise both that you are hiring and that you are using now-hiring.ca. This allows perspective employees to be able to log on to the website and find out everything about the job, and see if it is a fit for them. They can also post there resume right there. No more off-the-street walk-ins who are not serious or qualified.

For prospective employees, you can search jobs by different categories and descriptions, or by your preferred location. They also have resume tips to help you make the right decisions on what information to put on your resume and how to format it to make it the cleanest and most readable.
